String quartet, string trio or string duo?

How to hire wedding musicians

Before we get into the details – congrats on your engagement! What an exciting time of life! There is so much to look forward to and many memories to be made on your big day.

Live music is a special part of a wedding and the songs played at your wedding can create magical moments for you and your partner.  Planning a wedding can be stressful but hiring wedding musicians, weather it is a string quartet, string trio or string duo, doesn’t have to be.

We have booked and played in hundreds of weddings and one of the questions we always get is “How many musicians do I need to hire for my ceremony?” There really isn’t one right answer – it all depends on what you have in mind for your wedding. Let’s jump in and figure it out together.

String Duo

We believe the string duo is the sweet spot for hiring wedding musicians to play for your wedding ceremony or even cocktail hour.

Typically, our duos consists of a violin and a cello player that make for a great team to play your favorite tunes. The two instruments work well with each other in that they both thrive where the other may lack a bit. Generally, the violin will have the melody that you would recognize, and the cello will support the violin to sort of fill out the sound with the low notes.

What we really love about the string duo is that this is where you get the most bang for your buck. You don’t have to break the bank in hiring several musicians, but you also don’t sacrifice the quality of the music. A violin and cello are a great combo to make the music beautiful without adding on extra costs.

String Trio and String Quartet

I am sure you are starting to get the idea by now but as we add a third player (string trio) and then a fourth player (string quartet) you are going to have a real live concert at your wedding. Many tunes are written for string quartet and that is when you will be able to hear every single part of the song you request – the guitar solo, drums, chorus. The string quartet will cover it all.

One thing to be aware of is as you hire more musicians the price is also going to increase. A string quartet can be a little more expensive, but the quality of the music and the songs can’t be beat.
